Air India Flight AI-171 Crash in Ahmedabad Leaves One Survivor Amid Devastating Tragedy
A devastating Air India Flight AI-171 crash near Ahmedabad Airport on June 12, 2025, claimed hundreds of lives, leaving only one survivor, Vishwas Kumar Ramesh. The tragedy at B.J. Medical College campus caused widespread destruction, while the survivor continues to battle severe psychological trauma and financial hardship following the loss of his brother.
The aircraft, identified as Air India Flight AI-171, carried passengers and crew when it went down shortly after departure. According to initial accounts, there were 241 passengers on board, with only one person surviving the crash. Later reports indicated that the total number of people on board was 242, of whom 241 lost their lives. In addition, 19 people on the ground also died in the aftermath of the impact and fire.
The sole survivor, Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British citizen, was seated in 11A. He miraculously survived with only minor injuries, reportedly due to his proximity to the emergency exit, which allowed him to escape the burning wreckage quickly. Images captured after the crash showed him injured, blood-stained, and walking away from the disaster site, a scene that was widely circulated across television networks and social media platforms.
Vishwas Kumar Ramesh had been traveling to London along with his younger brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, who did not survive the incident. He later recounted that when he regained consciousness, he was surrounded by bodies and widespread devastation, forcing him to flee the scene in shock and terror.
In an interview with the Hindustan Times, he described the horrifying moment of survival, stating that upon waking, he saw “dead bodies all around” and immediately ran away from the wreckage. While his physical injuries have healed over time, he continues to suffer from severe psychological trauma. He struggles with sleep disturbances and ongoing emotional distress caused by the memory of the crash.
Friends and family members have also indicated that Ramesh continues to face significant mental health challenges following the tragedy. Despite surviving what many have called a miraculous escape, he has been unable to fully recover from the emotional burden of losing his brother and witnessing the aftermath of the disaster.
The crash not only caused immense personal loss but also disrupted the financial stability of the Ramesh family. It has been reported that Vishwas Kumar Ramesh and his brother had invested most of their savings in a fish business in India, and following the crash and Ajay Kumar Ramesh’s death, the family’s financial plans collapsed into uncertainty.
The Ahmedabad Air India disaster remains one of the most devastating aviation tragedies in recent memory, marked by overwhelming loss of life and the extraordinary survival of a single passenger who continues to live with the enduring psychological scars of that day.
